PureThermal 2 - FLIR Lepton Smart I/O Module
Mfr. Part #
Product Description

PureThermal 2 is a hackable thermal webcam for the FLIR Lepton (2.x - 3.x) LWIR camera core. It is the result of lisetining to our thousands of PureThermal 1 users and giving them what they want: four mounting holes, pads for optional EM shielding, less complex circuitry, and perhaps best of all, USB DFU. That's right, a JTAG breakout board will no longer be required to update PureThermal 2. This is a development kit ready to be embedded into a production system.

PT2 is an evolutionary design over PureThermal 1:

  • STM32F412 ARM microprocessor. Execute on-board image processing without the need for an external system or SBC
  • USB UVC works on Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android
  • Open source reference firmware is on the GroupGets Github
  • Open source reference image viewer software for Linux and macOS
  • Powered by USB micro-B cable
  • Device Firmware Updates (DFU) over USB
  • Electromagnetic Shielding pads on top and bottom

Admittedly we screwed up and made the boards green instead of blue. Rather than wastefully scrap the lot, we're going to offer a small batch at a discount here. The boards are already produced and validated on Lepton 2.x and 3.x. The next rev of the board will only have a color/silkscreen change. This campaign has no minimum order quantity and will expire on Feb 28 at 11:55 PM PST.

We've been quietly working on the design for awhile and rest assured, we stuck with the same STM32F4 MCU so yours and our existing firmware will easily port.

Stay tuned to this campaign for firmware updates, a new PT2 landing page link, and demo videos.

Options and Add-Ons

FLIR Lepton 2.5

The FLIR Lepton 2.5 camera core is a long-wave infrared (LWIR) thermal imaging marvel that builds upon its 2.0 predecessors in that it now delivers a temperature value for each pixel irrespective of the temperature of the camera itself.

Lepton 2.5

FLIR Lepton 3.0

The FLIR Lepton 3.0 has a resolution of 160x120 pixels or 2x that of Lepton 2.x, although the FLIR Lepton 3.0 is not radiometric.

FLIR Lepton Breakout Board

This is the fourth version of the first breakout board for the FLIR Lepton LWIR thermal imaging camera core that lets you plug in all Lepton types into your favorite single-board computing platform like Raspberry Pi, Pine64, Intel Edison, and more.

How it works

This is a group buy campaign that needs to acquire at least the stated minimum amount of pledges from backers like you before the Unit Deliverable and any Add-Ons ship. We do not charge anyone until the Progress above hits 100% or greater, otherwise there is no charge. All campaign products are vetted as existing and functional so your order will be fulfilled within the Factory Lead Time if the campaign succeeds. Please see our FAQ page for more details on our billing process.

I have just created the GroupGet for PureThermal 2 - FLIR Lepton Smart I/O Module!

At this time, Lepton 2.5 is the only publicly available radiometric Lepton.

I see that this ends Sun, 04 Mar 2018 12:00:00 -0800, but I also see that there is a two week factory lead time. Do you know the date that we should expect this in our hands?

Is it true that the shipping to Germany is 41$? Must be a joke, right?

If I order it now, when will it be shipped please?

  • 9zi7mnmg normal

We have already made the boards so they will ship within a few days after the campaign closes and all payments settle.

@mahonyyy: Regarding shipping overseas - yes, that is the fee. We currently only ship with tracking and insurance overseas due to the high rate of theft and loss we experienced when we started. $41 is the cheapest level of such service. We have recently integrated a cheaper level service that will be at a user's own risk (read - we will not provide refunds for lost packages with that service) but we are still testing it. I can't say when it will be live.

Thanks for the response. I can totally understand your agruments but 41$ shipping for a single board of 70$ is a bit strange. I will see if I can find someone to join an order.

Are there any schematics or pcb dimensions that you can release now before we get the boards in hand so we can start designing around it! Thanks, we're excited!

another question: is there still also the possibility to get an analog video output as on V1?
I did not find any image of the backside of the board - might answer my question.

Hey Mahonyyy, we removed analog from this version of the board - sorry.
